Duong Dong
To get your hands on the simple daily life of Phu Quoc, the best way is to spend a whole day wandering around Duong Dong. The mixed sounds from the market, the river mouth pier, the rustling of boat engines, smoky eateries and the intertwined streets are all vivid proof that this is a bustling settlement center for locals, not a faint stop for passers-by.

How to visit
Duong Dong has everything you need: from markets, shops to countless utility services; but remember, it's a whole vast territory, not a single dot on the map. When you need to call a ride or go on a date, you have to give a clear address: the name of the street, the number of the house, the neighborhood or the name of the specific hotel. Especially during rush hour, trying to get through the dense traffic in the center can take up a lot more time than you think.
Know before you go
The yellowed postcards of a small, peaceful coastal town no longer depict the true appearance of Duong Dong today. The city has expanded, and the traffic is much busier; but miraculously, hidden around the day market, where the estuary is windy, and along the harbor, the traditional rhythm of life has been flowing for generations. Just take a slow stroll through a few streets here, and you will feel the interesting intersection of a young modern city and an ancient island town standing with their backs to each other.
Before you visit
- Clearly two concepts: Duong Dong day market and night market are two separate places, with two completely different breaths and rhythms of life.
- A detailed address must be provided when booking a car; the generic name "Duong Dong" is not enough information for drivers to find the right pick-up point.
- If you're in a hurry to run on a fixed schedule, always generously set aside some time for inner-city traffic.
- To empathize with the soul of the area, leave your car behind and take a walk around the river or market; the experience will be far different from just sitting and clicking your phone through the car window.
