Sao Beach

Sao Beach can look very different from one day to the next. On a calm day the water may be clear and the sand bright; on another, stronger waves, seaweed or crowds can change the experience completely. Check current sea conditions and choose the right section rather than assuming the entire beach is the same.

How to visit

When the sea is calm and weather is favourable, two to four hours is usually enough for swimming, resting and a meal before adding another southern stop. The beach has several access points and service operators, so prices for loungers, food and water activities are not uniform. If you plan to swim, check the forecast and also ask staff at the exact section of beach where you are standing.

A beach to choose according to today's conditions
Sao Beach has been part of Phu Quoc travel itineraries for many years, but the real experience changes with season, tide, wind, rain and visitor numbers.
Before going, check:
• Which direction the wind is coming from.
• Whether waves are strong at the section you plan to visit.
• Whether rain or thunderstorms are expected during your swimming window.
• Which section is currently well maintained and has the services you need.
• Whether lifeguards or warning signs are present where you plan to enter the water.

Know before you go

Sao Beach does not look like its promotional photographs every day. The sea can be flat and the sand clean, or seaweed, wind and crowds can change the beach considerably. When conditions are poor, a shoreline walk or lunch nearby can make more sense than forcing a swim. Use photographs as reference only; make the swimming decision from the actual conditions.

Do not confuse Sao Beach with Rach Vem
Sao Beach is in southern Phu Quoc and is a beach with tourism services. Rach Vem is in the north and is a fishing settlement often associated with shallow-water starfish viewing and floating rafts.
They are far apart and offer very different experiences.

Before you visit

  • Look at the sea and ask staff in the area before entering the water.
  • Confirm prices for loungers, food and water-sport packages before using them.
  • Sao Beach is in the south; it is not the starfish area at Rach Vem in the north.
  • Do not swim far offshore or beyond marked safe-swimming areas when no lifeguard is present.
