Birds in Phu Quoc

Phu Quoc owns a diverse habitat for countless species of birds, from the vast North Island, cool stream beds to coastal alluvial areas. If you want to enjoy the world of birds, try slowing down and keeping quiet; the joy sometimes comes from feeling the natural space rather than counting the number of species seen.

Check current conditions

Listening to the shimmering birds singing in the early morning, you should start your trip at dawn, equip yourself with specialized binoculars and maintain a polite observation distance. Absolutely do not use loudspeakers that emit fake bird sounds to lure or get too close to the bird's nest to take pictures. Even if you go in the right season, the number of species encountered still depends on the weather and the serenity of the area.

Things that are easy to miss

Freebirds do not appear according to a predetermined tour scenario. There are mornings when you will hear a lot of chirping but only glimpses of a few wings; many shy birds often hide or migrate seasonally. A successful birdwatching session lies in patience and a relaxed experience, no need to hunt for a full catalog of rare species.

When going out

  • Keep the space as quiet as possible and observe all species from a safe distance.
  • Do not shine the flash directly on the bird and do not use artificial bird lures.
  • Stay away from nesting birds or protected areas with signs restricting access.
  • When recording rare species, notify a specialized agency instead of publicly posting the coordinates of sensitive birds' nests.
