Self-drive car rental
A self-drive car gives a group control over timing and stops, but before accepting the keys you need to check driving-licence validity, insurance, deposit terms, the vehicle's condition and the rental contract. International visitors should pay particular attention to the rules governing foreign licences and international driving permits in Vietnam.
How to prepare?
Where required, carry a valid national driving licence for the correct vehicle class together with an International Driving Permit issued under the 1968 Vienna Convention. At handover, photograph existing damage and read the terms on delivery fees, insurance, kilometre limits and roadside assistance if the vehicle breaks down.
Situations to keep in mind
A rental company agreeing to hand over a car does not by itself prove that you are legally entitled to drive it. Cost also deserves a proper comparison: self-drive is not automatically cheaper than hiring a car with a driver, particularly for a small group, difficult parking or a contract with multiple extra charges.
Before you go
- Check that your national licence and any required IDP are valid for the class of vehicle you plan to drive.
- Read the insurance, deposit, kilometre-limit and extra-fee terms carefully.
- Photograph or video the vehicle at both collection and return.
- Check parking availability at your accommodation and planned stops.
