Phu Quoc Ridgeback
The distinctive ridge of hair running in the opposite direction along the back is the best-known visual sign of the Phu Quoc Ridgeback. But a serious assessment of an individual dog also considers body structure, movement, health and documented lineage; the ridge alone is not enough to establish breed purity.

Learn more
At a Phu Quoc dog conservation or breeding facility, ask about lineage, breed standards, health records and how the dogs are cared for. Performance demonstrations show trained behaviour, not the complete character of the breed. Ask the handler before touching or feeding any dog.
Understanding the story in context
The dorsal ridge is a famous feature, but it does not replace the full standards used to assess structure, origin and health. Stories about exceptional abilities should also be separated into documented observation, local experience and claims for which strong evidence is still lacking.
If you visit
- Do not touch an unfamiliar dog without the handler's permission.
- Look beyond entertainment demonstrations and ask about welfare and everyday care.
- If you are considering buying a dog, check pedigree and health documentation carefully.
- Do not assume every dog with a ridge on its back is automatically a purebred Phu Quoc Ridgeback.
