Night squid fishing

Night squid-fishing trips usually begin around sunset, when the boat reaches the fishing area, lights are switched on and guests lower jigs into the water. Some nights produce a good catch and some produce very little, so the right expectation is a safe night-sea experience rather than a guaranteed bucket of squid.

How to schedule?

Before booking, confirm the meeting time, departure pier, expected return, meal and life-jacket arrangements. If you are prone to seasickness, tell the operator in advance. A light jacket and waterproof pouch are useful because it can feel windier, cooler and much darker offshore at night.

A visitor activity rooted in the rhythm of night fishing
Night squid fishing gives travellers a small taste of life at sea after sunset: light on the water, waiting, working the line and accepting that nature decides the result.
Some tours are described as departing from Duong Dong or An Thoi, but the pier and fishing area can change with seasonal winds, marine conditions and each operator's arrangements. Do not treat the port named in an old itinerary as fixed for every day.

What may be different

Some nights squid gather around the lights; on others, the catch can be sparse. Squid do not follow a tour timetable, so catch quantity should not be treated as a promise. The night-sea atmosphere can still make the trip worthwhile, but if the weather deteriorates, safety decisions by the captain take priority.

Choose the departure area according to season and sea conditions
Before going, reconfirm:
• Whether the boat leaves from Duong Dong, An Thoi or another pier.
• Travel time from the hotel to the pier.
• Whether the fishing area is in a bay, offshore or near the islands.
• Boat type, group size and seating area.
• Wind and wave forecast and the chance of postponement.
• Whether there is a toilet, enough life jackets and support for seasick guests.
Anyone prone to motion sickness should eat lightly, avoid alcohol and ask which part of the boat has less movement. Children should wear a properly fitted life jacket and remain under direct adult supervision.

Before the trip

  • Confirm the departure pier and expected return time.
  • Check wind and wave conditions and ask what happens if the trip must be postponed.
  • If you use motion-sickness medication, follow appropriate medical or product guidance.
  • Stay within designated safe areas while the boat is underway.
