Buying Phu Quoc fish sauce: how to read the label

Not every bottle bearing the words Phu Quoc means the same thing. Understanding geographical indication, product type and label information helps you choose confidently.

After visiting a fragrant barrel house, a shelf of fish-sauce bottles can be confusing. Darker colour or a very high protein claim is not enough: start with the product's formal name, origin and required label details.

Two calls, two things to understand

The Phu Quoc fish sauce brand has been granted a certificate of geographical indication protection in Vietnam since 2001 and was officially registered in the European Union in 2012. However, according to the Local Technical Regulations issued in 2023, there is a clear delineation between "Phu Quoc geographical indication fish sauce" and "Phu Quoc traditional fish sauce". Each name comes with its own set of strict standards for input materials, fermentation process, and finished product quality. Remember, these are legal and technical norms, not a taste ranking of which bottle is better than another.

What to look for if you want to buy a type with geographical indications?

To be sure to buy the right fish sauce with a geographical indication, look for a specific logo and carefully read the name, address of the production facility and other mandatory information on the bottle label. It should be noted that the words "Phu Quoc traditional fish sauce" do not automatically mean that the product is labeled with a geographical indication. On the contrary, just a glance at a corner of the packaging is not enough basis to evaluate the entire product. If you are still worried, do not hesitate to ask the manufacturer directly or look up information from the geographical indication management board.

After all, it is still a bottle of fish sauce suitable for meals

Everyone's taste is different: some people are addicted to fish sauce that smells like pure anchovies to make raw dipping sauce, others prefer a milder flavor to taste when cooking. Although the protein index is a useful reference measure, it cannot fully describe the aroma, sweetness or the most ideal combination. If you choose fish sauce as a gift, you should carefully check the content, sealing stamp, ingredient list and storage instructions. Especially, for people who abstain from fish or have allergies, it is paramount to examine the label before closing the order.
